WE HAVE IGNITION 2003

Play it by Ear Productions, through a new works commissioning program, creates opportunities for emerging and mid-career playwrights: in the theatrical world today, more and more theatres are opting for "safe seasons."  Developing and premiering a new play from a new writer, or for that matter an established writer, is now considered a financial risk that few theatres are willing to take.

The American theatre's survival is dependent on new plays and on new talent, which Play it by Ear Productions fosters, the end result being an anthology of one-act audio theatre pieces called the "We Have Ignition" series.  Here are the offerings from 2003:

THE FIELD written by Elizabeth Benjamin.  Directed by Elizabeth Gottlieb and Nathan Dean.
Starring: Glenn Kessler, Keira Naughton, and James Fall.

Inside, a couple in their recently purchased farmhouse out West.
Outside, American Indians unearth ancient tribal remains.
Unseen forces swirl around them in the wind...

Winner of the 2003 Gold Ogle Award for Best Fantasy/Horror/Mystery Audio Production of the Year presented by the American Society for Science Fiction Audio and the Minnesota Society for Interest in Science Fiction and Fantasy.

MATTHEW, MARK, LUKE, and CHAZ written and directed by Robert Grady.
Starring: Chip Gudger, Lance Roger Axt, Matt Mullin, and Robert Grady.

Four different apostles.  One small room in Judea.  One legally changed name.

Can one anal retentive, two gossips, and a guy named Chaz write the true story of the savior of the world without bickering after five minutes? If you have ever wondered why there are four versions of the life of Jesus, playwright Robert Grady has the answer.

...Well, not really.

THE LOVE SONG OF... written by Lynn Rosen.  Directed by Eileen Myers.
Starring: Polly Adams and Jen Albano.

On a rainy New York City street corner, Kelly huddles begrudgingly with her mother as they wait for Dad to pick them up for Grandma's party.  She'd rather be with her new friends at Columbia University - Grandma doesn't even remember anyone, and Mom is so...Long Island.  But as they wait, questioning if Dad will ever come, they learn things about each other they never knew, while fearing they'll never know enough.

THE FIELD, MATTHEW, MARK, LUKE, and CHAZ, and THE LOVE SONG OF... were recorded between the months of February and May of 2003 at SueMedia Studios, Long Island, New York.  Sound design was by David Shinn, and live foley effects were designed and performed by Sue Zizza.  The "We Have Ignition: 2003" series premiered in the months of June and July of 2003 on WNYE FM in New York City, and have subsequently aired on KPFA (San Francisco Bay Area), KFAI (St. Paul, Minnesota), KUNM (New Mexico), and were part of the nationally syndicated series "The Radio Works."
