Full story below...

About Play it by Ear Productions...
In the summer of 2002, a new not-for-profit theatre production company devoted to the development and distribution of original plays for radio, the internet, and compact disc was created in New York City called Play it by Ear Productions.  The following year, three world-premiere one-act works were produced for the anthology series "We Have Ignition."

From the summer of 2003 on, Play it by Ear has made the Central Coast of California its home, and in January of 2005, its presence was made known in the Monterey/Carmel area with a live re-creation of Norman Corwin's legendary audio essay We Hold These Truths at the Canterbury Woods Auditorium in Pacific Grove, a presentation which featured a record 18 local actors.

In 2006, Play it by Ear initiated a series of live re-creations of shows from the golden age of radio, called "Those Thrilling Days of Yesteryear" in Pacific Grove. This was followed by the "A Signal to Noise" series in 2008, where modern plays, classic tomes, dark fantasies, and political statements are performed live audio-theatre-style, beginning with Ron Sossi and Frank Condon's adaptation of The Chicago Conspiracy Trial in 2008, and continuing with Starstruck by Elaine Lee, Susan Norfleet, and Dale Place (with Michael Kaluta) in 2009.

Play it by Ear has also been instrumental in bringing audio theatre to a new generation of listeners in the Central Coast through collaborations with the Children's Experimental Theatre of Carmel, the School of Dramatic Arts at Pacific Repertory Theatre, and the International School of Monterey.

Numerous audio theatre projects are in various stages of development with Play it by Ear Productions.  Keep checking back for updates!

At long last! COMPACT DISCS of The Field are available!

The 2003 "We Have Ignition" plays are also available for MP3 DOWNLOAD through the Spoken Network! The Field by Elizabeth Benjamin, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and Chaz by Robert Grady, and The Love Song Of... by Lynn Rosen!

A few words from the Producing Director:

Fifteen days into the new year and I am truly up to my neck in projects. In fact I can't believe that only 15 days have gone by, it feels like two months. One of the those projects (no, not Turn to Stone) needs some mention here. If you regularly read or sometimes read or once-in-a-blue-moon read my Play it by Ear blog (link above) then you know about the not-for-profit organization that I have been a part of since 2002, the National Audio Theatre Festivals, Inc. As of last year, I joined their Board of Directors, and am active involved with the future of the organization.

You will probably also know the name Norman Corwin, one of the last surviving directors and writers from the golden age of radio (We Hold These Truths; On a Note of Triumph) and undoubtedly one of the greatest names in the history of broadcasting. Those of you in Pacific Grove got to experience one of his earliest works last month, The Plot to Overthrow Christmas. Norman has been an Advisory Board Member since the NATF's inception. And on May 3, 2010, the poet laureate of radio will turn 100 years old!

Now comes the request: one of my forthcoming producing projects is an intimate inaugural award ceremony in Burbank, CA, which will take place on April 30. The NATF is initiating an award presented to audio dramatists who have contributed 20 or more years to the medium. The award is called The Norman Corwin Award for Excellence in Audio Theatre. And come April 30, we're giving the first award to its namesake, Mr. Corwin.

The event will feature several live tributes and a reading of his updated radio drama Between Americans, culminating with the presentation of "The Corwin." We are hoping to have some celebrity names joining us for the event, and have been looking for donations and sponsorship for this once-in-a-lifetime event.

I am happy to announce that we have received a private donation of $10,000 toward the event/award presentation. However, we need to find a matching donation or donations from individuals or business/corporations, all at once or piecemeal, provided it equals the amount of $10,000 before February 27.

As the National Audio Theatre Festivals is a not-for-profit (501c3) organization, your donation is tax deductible. Please visit the NATF website at www.natf.org to make a secure donation by Paypal. Time is of the essence, so please make your donation today, and when you're done, tell your friends! Need I say more to come?

Thanks for listening,
